Dataminers found a model for a new rifle called the LAR in the Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) files after Valve’s Oct. 28 update, Hotspawn and dust2.us reported. The weapon was previously named the M14.
What the files show
Hotspawn wrote that dataminer aquaismissing determined the M14 had been renamed to the LAR and now has a model in the files. The outlet said dataminers have since put the model into the game, which confirmed animations and a HUD icon. It described these as not yet ready.
Dust2.us credited dataminers such as Gabe Follower with the same find. It reported that the weapon sits in a folder whose name says it is not to be shipped, and called it a long way from launch, “if it ever launches.”
Hotspawn called it a lever-action rifle. Dust2.us wrote that leakers describe it as a single-shot rifle like the Winchester, and also called it a scoped rifle.
How it started
Hotspawn wrote that CS2 files revealed a potential new gun in September, and that those files could have been leftovers from internal tests. The outlet said the latest update shows Valve intends to add a gun in the future. It also said that not every CS2 leak ends up in the game and that the LAR may never be added.
Hotspawn added that no new gun has been added to the game since 2018.
The rest of the update
The same update also added a silent reload toggle and, dust2.us reported, a Big Head mode.
Why it matters
The Oct. 28 update added a model for a rifle that the files now call the LAR instead of the M14, according to Hotspawn and dust2.us.
