CS2 economy guide: round count, loss bonus and reward changes
How the Counter-Strike 2 economy works in Valve's patch notes: the 24-round match, the loss bonus counter, kill rewards, team awards and price changes.

Money in Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) decides who can afford rifles and utility each round. This guide collects the economy rules and changes that Valve’s own announcements and patch notes state, from the 2018-2019 loss bonus rework in CS:GO to the 2024-2026 CS2 updates.
How many rounds a CS2 match has
On Aug. 31, 2023, Valve announced a shorter match for CS2: a maximum of 24 rounds in regulation, with a six-round overtime if the teams are tied. This applies to Premier, Competitive and the Majors.
Valve tied the change to the economy. It wrote that over the past decade it had shipped updates to the economy and weapon balance “to trim the fat and reduce the number of uncontested rounds in a match of CS.” Valve said that lets exciting matches be decided in fewer rounds, so players can play more often.
How the loss bonus works
The loss bonus is extra money for a team that loses a round. All amounts below come from CS:GO patch notes from 2018 and 2019.
Start of the half
On Oct. 9, 2018, Valve changed the start-of-half economy to reduce the impact of a pistol round win on later rounds. In Competitive Matchmaking, both teams started the half with a one-round “losing streak” that is reset after a round win. The round 1 loser received $1,900 instead of $1,400, then $2,400 for a subsequent loss. Valve wrote that this start-of-half losing streak can be adjusted via mp_starting_losses.
The loss counter
On March 13, 2019, Valve made the bonus depend on a count of the team’s round losses. The count goes up by one after every loss and down by one after every win, with a minimum of 0. Before this, a win reset the bonus.
| Round losses in the count | Loss bonus |
|---|---|
| 0 | $1,400 |
| 1 | $1,900 |
| 2 | $2,400 |
| 3 | $2,900 |
| 4 or more | $3,400 |
Teams still begin the half with a count of 1. Valve said the goal was to reduce the negative feedback loop after streaks of losses. This behavior is on by default and is controlled by the server setting mp_consecutive_loss_aversion. The bonus is still capped by mp_consecutive_loss_max multiplied by cash_team_winner_bonus_consecutive_rounds.
Stepping down from the maximum
On May 14, 2019, Valve wrote that loss bonus money “will now always step down to $2,900 after a team with a $3,400 max loss bonus streak wins a round.”
Shorthanded income
On Jan. 27, 2021, Valve added the “Shorthanded Loser Income” to CS:GO for Competitive and Wingman. If a team had fewer players than the opponent for three or more consecutive rounds in the half, each of its members received $1,000 after a round loss. It did not apply when a player was kicked.

Tracking your money in the buy menu
The April 25, 2024 update added two buy menu features that help with economy decisions:
- The title bar shows the minimum amount of money a player is guaranteed to have in the next round.
- A “Dropped Weapons” panel shows weapons dropped by teammates standing in the buy zone and lets you pick them up directly.
The May 23, 2024 update fixed a bug where the Refund All button only refunded a single flashbang grenade.
