CS2 binds: which multi-input binds still work and why

Counter-Strike 2 ignores binds that combine several movement or attack commands. Here is the rule, the 24 commands, the convar and Valve's hardware policy.

Counter-Strike 2 does not accept every bind. Since the Aug. 19, 2024 update, in-game binds that combine more than one movement or attack action are ignored by default. Valve Official Servers can also kick players suspected of automating several actions from one input.

This guide covers what Valve’s patch notes and announcements say about those rules, the commands they affect and the related settings. It does not cover the syntax of the bind command itself. The rules described here are as of the Nov. 27, 2024 update.

How the rules on binds changed

The restrictions did not arrive in one step. Valve went back and forth before settling on the current rule.

Date Change
March 30, 2023 Valve wrote in the release notes: “Multiple actions cannot be bound to one key.”
June 6, 2023 Valve fixed a bug that made input permanently broken when multiple commands were bound to one key. It wrote: “Multi-binds are back, except for jump-throw binds (which are now a skillful part of CS).”
Aug. 19, 2024 Binds with more than one of 24 listed commands are ignored by default. Null-binds and jump-throw binds stop working.
Sept. 9, 2024 Valve added counter-strafe automation detection options for non-Valve servers.
Nov. 27, 2024 Valve added the sv_quantize_movement_input setting, enabled by default.

Which binds are ignored now

In the Aug. 19, 2024 release notes, Valve wrote that input binds that include more than one of the following commands are ignored by default:

  • sprint, reload, attack, attack2
  • turnleft, turnright, turnup, turndown
  • forward, back, left, right
  • moveup, movedown, klook, use
  • jump, duck, strafe, zoom
  • yaw, pitch, forwardback, rightleft

In the accompanying announcement, Valve gave null-binds and jump-throw binds as examples of binds that will no longer work. Valve said the change was meant to prevent accidental infractions, since automating multiple actions from a single input is no longer allowed.

Turning multi-input binds back on

The release notes say support can be re-enabled with the cheat-protected convar cl_allow_multi_input_binds 1.

Jump-throws without a bind

Valve wrote that jump-throws became such an important part of the game that it made them reliable without any special scripting or binds. You jump and quickly throw a grenade.

On March 30, 2023, Valve added a player-only sound for a correctly jump-thrown grenade. Since the Aug. 19, 2024 update, other players nearby can hear this confirmation grunt too.

Hardware that automates input

The rule covers hardware as well as scripts. Valve wrote that some hardware features have blurred the line between manual input and automation. The Aug. 19, 2024 release notes say certain types of movement or shooting input automation, such as hardware-assisted counter strafing, are detected on Valve official servers and result in a kick from the match.

Community servers and analog input

Valve’s Sept. 9, 2024 release notes added counter-strafe input automation detection options for non-Valve servers. They are the sv_auto_cstrafe family of convars, and Valve pointed server operators to the convar descriptions for details.

The Nov. 27, 2024 update added sv_quantize_movement_input, enabled by default. According to Valve, it keeps players from using analog binds to move at fractional speeds that the game is not designed to handle.

Other bind changes in the patch notes

  • Mouse wheelSince June 6, 2023, commands bound to mouse wheels are executed reliably.
  • Key layoutsValve fixed issues with its scancode-based key bindings in the Feb. 15, 2024 release notes. Bindings are now independent of input locales.
  • Hand switchingThe May 23, 2024 update added explicit switchhandsleft and switchhandsright console commands.

FAQ

Do null-binds still work in CS2?

No. Valve named null-binds as an example of binds that stopped working on Aug. 19, 2024. The release notes say binds with more than one of the 24 listed commands are ignored by default.

Do jump-throw binds work in CS2?

No. Valve wrote that jump-throw binds no longer work. Jump-throws themselves still work: you jump and quickly throw a grenade without any special bind.

Can I turn multi-input binds back on?

The release notes name the cheat-protected convar cl_allow_multi_input_binds 1 for re-enabling support.

Can I be kicked for using Snap Tap?

Valve wrote that players suspected of automating multiple actions from a single input may be kicked, initially only on Valve Official Servers. The same announcement told players with a keyboard input-automation feature such as Snap Tap Mode to disable it before joining a match.

Do these rules apply on community servers?

The kick policy began on Valve Official Servers. For non-Valve servers, Valve added counter-strafe input automation detection options, the sv_auto_cstrafe convars, on Sept. 9, 2024.
